Dr. J.V. Rao assumed directorate office at NITRA in the year 2001. He is an M.Tech from Madras University and Ph.D from IIT Delhi. Before joining NITRA, Dr. Rao had been a professor and research scientist for 30 years at Anna University, Chennai and headed Department of Textile Technology. He has many research projects to his credit and has also guided about 75 Ph.D, M.Tech and B.Tech level projects. He has authored technical books and published articles in national and international journals.

On joining NITRA, he initiated large scale manpower training activities for garment industry as well as devised strategies for complete industry orientation of NITRA’s research, consultancy, quality evaluation and other industry related issues. Under his guidance, today NITRA is working on collaborative assignments with premier Indian organizations. He was instrumental in setting up the Centre of Excellence (Protech) at NITRA in order to familiarize technical textiles to the Indian entrepreneurs. Dr. Rao’s initiative has helped NITRA make a mark in international arena and handling projects for clients based in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Following his keen interest to develop NITRA as a high quality institute for technical education, presently he is working on establishing NITRA Group of Institutes, which will spearhead technical education especially for textile, garment and fashion industry in India.
